From a Catholic perspective, it is important to first distinguish the following: "Mosaic Judaism" and "Pharisaical Judaism" are not the same. 1. Mosaic Judaism This refers to the Covenant of Moses, in the Torah given by God to Moses, which gave rise to the Temple worship, sacrifices, the Levitical priesthood, the observance of the Law, and the expectation of the promised Messiah. It is the Old Covenant, established by God as preparation for Christ. The Church does not see this as an "error," but as a true stage in the history of salvation: "The Law was our tutor leading to Christ" (Galatians 3:24). In other words: Mosaic Judaism prepares for the coming of Jesus. Conclusion: Mosaic Law is a law given by God. But the Pharisaic interpretation is a distorted human interpretation. Jesus does not fight against Moses or divine law, but against Pharisaism. Christ's critique is not against the Mosaic covenant, but against the Pharisaic distortion when religion becomes mere formalism without inner conversion. From a Catholic theological perspective. The Old Law was not abolished but fulfilled. Jesus says: “I have not come to abolish the Law but to fulfill it” (Mt 5:17). Therefore, Catholicism does not reject Moses but affirms that Christ brings the Law to its fulfillment. The New Covenant surpasses the old: animal sacrifices → sacrifice of Christ Levitical priesthood → priesthood of Christ circumcision → baptism Temple → Christ and the Church 2. Pharisaic Judaism Pharisaic Judaism and Talmudic (or Rabbinic) Judaism This is the form of Judaism that developed after the destruction of the Temple, based on the teachings of the rabbis and the compilation of the Mishnah and the Talmud. The center is no longer the Temple but the synagogue, study, and daily observance. Religious authority passes to the rabbis. The Oral Law was systematized, written, and developed in the Mishnah (2nd century) and later in the Talmud. The Pharisees were a movement within Second Temple Judaism (2nd century BCE–1st century CE), not all of Judaism. Their main characteristics: they accepted the Written Law but added a strong oral tradition (rabbinic interpretations). They placed great emphasis on ritual purity and detailed rules. After the destruction of the Temple (70 CE), their lineage gave rise to later Rabbinic Judaism. Talmudic Judaism, therefore, arose from Pharisaic Judaism. They are not identical, because Talmudic Judaism is a later development, more organized and adapted to a reality without the Temple.
