Because sentient beings differ in their spiritual capacities, the Buddha's teachings also differ — failing to understand these differences leads to intellectual confusion. In the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, the Buddha himself classifies his lifetime of teachings into three systems: the First Period (Four Noble Truths, no-self, nirvāṇa), and the Second Period (Two Truths, non-arising, reality beyond language).
