Stylized Trees in Gouache | Sketchbook Practice Session

Cozy sketchbook session of gouache stylized tree illustrations. In this sketchbook session, I wanted to experiment with tree forms and push them beyond realistic studies. Instead of painting the tree trunks straight, I played with different trunk shapes, bending them, twisting them and giving each tree a unique personality. I love how changing the structure of the trunk instantly changes the mood of the entire piece. I also explored a more whimsical idea, paintjng a tree with the trunk of a birch tree, but shaping the foliage like mushroom caps. The mushroom inspired tops made the trees feel storybook like. This exercise was all about loosening up, exploring stylization and letting nature inspired something a little unexpected.
