Often hailed as the "Nightingale of Odisha" and "Kokilo Kanthi," she is a doyen of Odissi vocal music, recognized for her soulful renditions of classical Odissi music, Chhanda, and Champu, authored by medieval Odia poet-musicians like Upendra Bhanja and Baladeba Ratha. Despite facing societal opposition in her childhood for pursuing music, she persevered with the support of her father and her uncle, the eminent Odissi musician Kalicharan Pattnaik. She began her musical journey at All India Radio Cuttack in 1950 at the age of 12. Her formal training in classical music was under Adiguru Pt. Singhari Shyamsundar Kar and Sangita Sudhakara Pt. Balakrushna Dash. She also studied voice culture under B. R. Deodhar and learned nuances of Thumri in Bombay. Beyond classical music, Devi has also excelled in traditional Odia folk music and Odia film music.
