A Tree Point of View: Pacific Rim Tonewoods (Documentary)
The Fretboard Journal’s latest documentary follows the story of Pacific Rim Tonewoods, one of the major suppliers of Spruce and Maple to the acoustic guitar industry. Located near the tiny town of Concrete, Washington, P.R.T. is essentially a bespoke sawmill, finding prized logs and cutting tops, sides and backs specifically for makers such as Taylor, Martin, Collings and others, including many small-scale luthiers. Founder Steve McMinn tells us about Pacific Rim Tonewood’s unlikely start in the early '80s: The Northwest native simply wanted to build himself a guitar. Though that guitar ended up in a bonfire, McMinn’s passion for woodworking and guitars has never waned. McMinn’s latest project finds himself partnering with Taylor Guitars to do the unlikely: propagate curly maple trees specifically for the world of instruments. Produced by the Fretboard Journal magazine with special thanks from Taylor Guitars. http://www.fretboardjournal.com http://taylorguitars.com
