Richard Dawkins on Russell's Celestial Teapot
The Hudson Union www.hudsonunionsociety.com is where everyone comes to be inspired, to change our world. Check us out on Twitter @ActualJoePascal Richard Dawkins is considered by some to be the modern day Charles Darwin. Richard Dawkins has revolutionized science and how society understands it. Dawkins is one of the most influential scientists of our time and in the history of science. The New York Times Book Review has hailed him as a writer who "'understands the issues so clearly that he forces his reader to understand them too." Dawkins is also considered one of science's most innovative thinkers. Richard Dawkins’ first book, The Selfish Gene, called “the best work of popular science ever written” by the New York Review of Books, caused a seismic shift in the study of biology by proffering the gene-centred view of evolution. This book completely transformed the way we think about genes and evolution and, since its publication in 1976, it has sold more than a million copies around the world. It was in this book that Dawkins coined the term “meme,” a unit of cultural evolution, which has itself become a mainstay in contemporary culture. Then in 2006, Dawkins transformed the world’s cultural and intellectual landscape again with The God Delusion, a takedown of religious faith, which has also sold more than a million copies around the world—nearly one million in the United States alone and his name became a byword for ruthless skepticism and “brilliant, impassioned, articulate, impolite” debate—in the words of the San Francisco Chronicle. The God Delusion, Dawkins contends that a supernatural creator almost certainly does not exist and that religious faith is a delusion—"a fixed false belief". The Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science mission is to support scientific education, critical thinking and evidence-based understanding of the natural world in the quest to overcome religious fundamentalism, superstition, intolerance and human suffering. In a recent poll, evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins was named the world's "Top Thinker" for his global influence and significance, ranking above four Nobel prize winners.Dawkins upcoming book, A Brief Candle in the Dark, Dawkins shares with us his infectious sense of wonder at the natural world, his enjoyment of the absurdities of human interaction, and his bracing awareness of life’s brevity: all of which have made a deep imprint on our culture. There will be a fascinating conversation with Richard Dawkins. Each paid attendee will receive Dawkins’s upcoming book A Brief Candle in the Dark. Early RSVPs are suggested as the event will reach capacity. “Richard Dawkins is a hero of mine, so being able to read about how he became the man and the thinker he is, was a particular delight for me. How his life formed from an inchoate, primordial soup and then never wavered from sound, scientific principles made for a huge page turning experience; he’s also a great writer, so that helps. Some people get their kicks from Superman’s origin story, or Batman’s origin story. or Jesus’. But for me, it was Richard Dawkins.” Bill Maher
