It was not too difficult, and the finished fish turned out really cute. We carried them with us for the rest of the day and evening until we returned to Michael's, where we gave them to the girls. Ryan then showed us how to create embers using a bamboo rod and stick to start a fire. After watching his demonstration, it seemed manageable, but it was much harder than I expected. By the time I finished, I was exhausted. Brenda did well too, although she was tired by the end as well. Brenda also learned how to hula dance. It was not a long session, just an introduction to the basics, but she did very well. The last activity we tried was spear throwing. We used bamboo poles about five feet long with metal tips on the ends. We were taught to throw them underhand, using our index finger to guide the release. Our first attempts were decent, but our second throws were much better. Overall, we really enjoyed these activities and appreciated the chance to learn more about Polynesian culture and way of life.
