Which do you think costs more in Russia: wasabi or hairy crab? From a Japanese perspective, the answer might seem obvious. But when I actually checked the prices at a market in Russia, that “obvious” answer started to look a little different. This time, I visited markets and supermarkets in Russia and compared the prices with Japan. I looked at everyday items like eggs, meat, fish, fruit, and vegetables. Some things felt surprisingly cheap, while others were more expensive than I expected. What surprised me the most was the hairy crab. In Japan, especially in Hokkaido, hairy crab has a luxury image. But at a Russian market, it was treated a little differently from how Japanese people might imagine it, which was really interesting to see. Is cheap hairy crab actually delicious? I bought one, cooked it, and tried it myself. In the second half of the video, I also talk a little about things beyond food, such as gas prices, salaries, and rent. Prices in Russia are not simply “cheap” or “expensive.” The impression can change a lot depending on whether something is local, imported, popular in the area, or easy to find.
