Lezione di canto con Pavarotti: tra errori e grandi verità!
#singing #vocalcoach #vocallessons DISCLAIMER: I am a modern singing teacher; I have nothing to do with the classical training of the great Luciano Pavarotti. However, I believe some of the insights in this video can be useful to everyone, both those studying opera and modern singing! I recently saw this video of Luciano Pavarotti, the great opera tenor, giving a lesson to a girl in the 1980s. In this video, the Maestro makes some very interesting statements, but they also left me puzzled at first. So, I tried to better understand what he meant, and in this video I try to explain my point. First statement (0:33): "The false chords are used to sing in falsetto": FALSE. Let's start with the fact that Pavarotti is a singer with a classical training. Classical singing has a very strong tradition that is rarely influenced by modern approaches. Furthermore, in the 1980s, the scientific and anatomical knowledge we have today didn't exist. This is probably why he didn't actually understand the role of the false cords, so we can also understand the terminological error. Second statement (2:46): "You have to make your stomach as hard as a wall": TRUE, but with some necessary clarifications. There are two ways to make a hard stomach: we can contract all the abdominal muscles, but this tightens and closes the throat, because it's a superficial muscle workout. The second way (the correct one, as he also describes) is to EXPAND the abdomen, activating a deeper support that interacts with the support that expands the chest and keeps the diaphragm contracted and lowered. This way, I don't feel a constriction, but an opening. What do you think about this? Do you agree with my analysis?
