After obtaining her Master's degree, she became an assistant at the Institute for Research in Humanities, Kyoto University. Subsequently, at the invitation of Professor Michio Morishima of the University of London, she became a visiting researcher at the Suntory-Toyota Institute for Economics and Related Fields (STICARD) at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) of the University of London. In 1997, she obtained her doctorate and received the 40th Nikkei Economic Book and Culture Award for her doctoral dissertation, "Finance in 'Manchukuo'" (Sobunsha).
