El Terremoto de Áncash en 1970

On March 31, 1970, the worst seismic disaster in Latin America during the 20th century occurred in Peru, just as the opening match of the 1970 World Cup in Mexico was being played. Known as the Ancash Earthquake, because it primarily affected that Peruvian region, the 7.9 magnitude earthquake initially killed 50,000 people. However, it triggered an avalanche on the snow-capped peak of Huascarán, Peru's highest mountain. This landslide wiped out the towns of Yungay and Ranrahirca, raising the death toll from the catastrophe to 70,000. Learn about those events in this video.
