It has been upgraded several times, most recently to the M109A7. The M109 family is the most common Western indirect fire support weapon used by maneuver brigades of armored and mechanized infantry divisions. The M109 has a crew of four: a section chief/commander, driver, gunner, and ammunition controller/loader. The gunner directs the gun left or right (deflection) and up and down (quadrant). The British Army replaced its M109 with the AS-90. Several European armed forces have or are replacing older M109s with the German PzH 2000. Upgrades to the M109 were introduced by the US (see variants) and Switzerland (KAWEST). With the cancellation of the US Crusader and Non-Line-of-Sight Cannon, the M109A6 ("Paladin") will likely remain the primary self-propelled howitzer for the US until the new M1299 enters service. The M109 is an intermediate variant of a US program that adopted a common chassis for its self-propelled artillery units. The lighter version, the M108 Howitzer, was phased out during the Vietnam War, but many were rebuilt into the M109. The M109 saw its combat debut in Vietnam. Approximately 200 vehicles were deployed in 1966, but the entire fleet suffered mechanical failure within a year of service. The US sent engineers and mechanics, but all M109s were recalled to the US in 1967 after they failed to be repaired in the field. The howitzer underwent subsequent improvements, resulting in the M109A1 variant, which entered production in 1970. Israel used the M109 against Egypt in the 1973 Yom Kippur War and the 1982 and 2006 Lebanon Wars. Iran used the M109 in the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s. The M109 was used by the British Army, the US Army, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia during the 1991 Gulf War. The M109 was also used by the US Army in the Iraq War from 2003 to 2011. Improvements to the gun, ammunition, fire control, survivability, and other electronic systems throughout its design life have expanded the system's capabilities, including tactical nuclear projectiles, guided projectiles (Copperhead), Rocket-Assisted Projectiles (RAP), Family of SCAtterable Mines (FASCAM), and cluster munitions (DPICM). In August 2015, a South Korean K55A1 fired shots behind the Military Demarcation Line as a warning after several North Korean provocations.[6] During Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Ukraine used M109 howitzers donated by Western countries.
