Aula de direção teatral com Luiz Carlos Maciel
In the 1960s, writer, director, and philosopher Luiz Carlos Maciel received a scholarship from the Rockefeller Foundation to take a course in Theater Directing at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, United States. The writer shares what he learned during the classes with Aderbal Freire Filho. According to Maciel, the basic fundamentals of theater direction proposed by author Alexander Dean were taught. The first is composition, or scene composition in Maciel's translation. This fundamental seeks to discuss the position of the characters on stage to emphasize the most important elements for the scene in question. Picture formation, on the other hand, reminds us that the composition of the scene should tell a story through body language and relationships between the characters. The third fundamental is movement. It takes into account the types, direction, and force, such as when an actor stands up on stage, or lies down, or goes to the back of the stage. "A movement from left to right is a strong movement, because the tendency of the human eye is this due to the habit of reading," explains Maciel. Rhythm, or rhythm, is the fourth fundamental principle, which defines the power of attraction and emotion of the theatrical piece in relation to its audience. It takes into account how the director should control the pacing of the scenes to compose the rhythm of the performance. The fifth and final principle is pantomime dramatization. The objective of this principle is to convey the story of the performance without relying on words, solely through the behavior of the actors on stage. Maciel also highlights that during the course, students were encouraged to analyze other types of art, such as painting and ballet, to find inspiration and better understand the fundamentals of theatrical direction. Have a lesson in directing, dramaturgy, and philosophy with Professor Luiz Carlos Maciel on Arte do Artista on September 28th. In the early hours of Tuesday morning at midnight.
