Florence Beatrice Price graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music in 1906. Her rise in prolificacy and recognition coincides with a dynamic cultural movement that spanned the 1920s and 30s. It was a movement driven by African American intellectuals and visionaries, otherwise known as the Harlem Renaissance. Sonata in E minor (won first prize in the 1932 Rodman Wanamaker Music Contest. She became the first woman composer of African descent to achieve both national and international recognition.
