Callisto: The Giant Moon Everyone Forgot — And Why That Was a Mistake

Callisto is nearly the size of Mercury. It carries the most heavily cratered surface in the entire Solar System - a four-and-a-half-billion-year-old record of cosmic bombardment that has never been erased. It is one of the four great moons Galileo discovered in 1610, one of the largest satellites in existence, and a world so enormous it would dominate planetary science if it orbited anywhere else. But Callisto orbits Jupiter. And because its three siblings include a volcanic hellscape, an ice world hiding a global ocean, and the largest moon in the Solar System, this giant got quietly forgotten. In this space documentary, we explore why Callisto's silence is not a deficiency - it is the very thing that made it irreplaceable. While every other large world in the Solar System erased its ancient surface through volcanism, tectonics, or resurfacing, Callisto preserved everything. Its craters record the bombardment history of the outer Solar System from the very beginning. Its partially differentiated interior challenges our understanding of how moons form. And a landmark 2025 study now suggests it very likely hides a subsurface ocean beneath more than a hundred kilometers of ancient ice — without any tidal heating to keep that water liquid.
