Starting with the Pen Tool It's by far the best option for making professional cutouts and selections in Photoshop, but of the tools that perform these functions, it's the most difficult to learn. However, over time I learned several different ways to use it, and in this tutorial I'll show you the first (and easiest) method to start mastering the Pen Tool. 2. The famous and dreaded Layer Mask At first we leave it aside and don't even imagine the importance it has in any Photoshop edit. With it you can edit in a non-destructive way and also apply effects/filters to specific regions of your layer. It's one of the main pillars of the program, and if you want to learn the basics of Photoshop, I recommend you set aside a good amount of time for it. 3. The unknown and ignored Smart Object But what is that? It's such a hidden option that seems irrelevant, right? Even its name isn't self-explanatory, which leaves many users confused about it. However, when it comes to non-destructive editing in Photoshop, it's also a fundamental part (just like the layer mask we just discussed). With Smart Objects, you can preserve your layer while keeping adjustments and filters editable, as well as group multiple layers, creating a protected environment to continue your editing.
