Salomon Sense Pro 6 vest (2024) review
I have previously owned various Salomon vests, starting with the Salomon Slab 2 (6y old and tattered but still in use), Salomon S/lab 12 (dead after 4y of use), Salomon Sense Pro 10 (lost in Japan somewhere), Salomon Adv Skin 5 (now relegated to training runs). I missed how light and breathable the Sense Pro 10 was (compared to the ADV skin series) thus I got this instead as I didnt need 10 litres capacity. This bag is ideal for competing at races with a max of 4-6 hours between checkpoints. It is very simple in design, with very little 'flopping about' bits, which is great for using whilst running fast on technical terrain. No stopping and wasting seconds with this pack. Drawbacks i think so far are the front pockets relying on stretch of the material to keep things locked down. This makes inserting the softflasks difficult when the pockets contain anything as they share the same space. This is true for most salomon vests, but i found this more noticeable. Whilst running, to stow the flasks, it is easiest to push things out of the way in the front pocket with one hand, whilst simultaneously pushing down on the flask with 3 fingers and pinching the tab on the softflask collar with the other 2.... or just stop running and do it properly. Not sure if its just a learning curve. The new flasks also have a different feel when tightening the caps on them. Ive made the mistake twice of not tightening them enough as I was used to how much resistance to feel for when tightening these caps on other softflasks. Again, its only really relevant when trying to rush through checkpoints to save less than a second, and a very tiny learning curve. Lastly, it is not bladder compatible - if you are trying to save seconds to minutes in a race, avoid using a bladder anyway. Overall only two super minor nitpicking. Compared to the ADV skin, this feels much lighter, more breathable, the fabric also holds on to much less water (making it lighter during heavy rain), it seems to dry much quicker too as a result. Maybe some things i mentioned dont make sense. Please comment if you have questions. I am thinking of maybe a video on how i maximise the use of these vests competitively. There are some bizarre fringe tips too like did you know you can strap this around your hip and it becomes a belt of sorts (only for fastwalking ultra-ultra long races when your shoulders are sore or blistered). Let me know if you think this would be useful.
