The Babycham Gardens (Kilver Court), Shepton Mallet, Somerset, Southern England - July 2025

Shepton Mallet is a picturesque and very interesting small town in the English County of Somerset, England, home to a former prison (open to visitors) and the world famous Bath and West Agricultural show. In the late 19th century, Ernest Jardine, MP for East Somerset, created ‘Jardine’s Park’ for his workers in the centre of the town, featuring gardens, allotments and a boating lake. The disused Charlton railway viaduct, built in 1874, also stands as a key part of the site's history. Herbert Showering, was member of the Showering family and he is known for creating the Babycham brand of sparkling pear cider (perry) which is still made at the nearby Showerings Cider Mill. The Showering family purchased the site in the 1950s, making significant changes to the gardens, including a rockery designed by Chelsea Flower Show winner, George Whitelegg. The site was then expanded and developed by Rodger Saul, founder of Mulberry, who the custodian of Kilver for 25 years. Nowadays, Kilver Court is once again owned again by the Showering family, who continue to celebrate its Babycham legacy, blending rich history with modern retail and cultural events. This visit was made in early July 2025 and is accompanied by a Lullaby from the Little Suite for Orchestra by the English composer, Trevor Duncan performed by the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Andrew Penny.
