On today’s show, we’re talking about why workbenches are better than the floor, managing customer expectations, and thick, thick workbenches. Matt is rehabbing a bandsaw. Shannon is doing some flea market flipping. KICKBACK Janae writes in after watching episode 609 and hearing Alex Snodgrass talk about bandsaw blades that break at the weld. Less than two hours later, her new-to-her 2 HP, 14" Grizzly bandsaw made a loud pop while she was making a bandsaw box. Because of the episode, she calmly shut down the saw, confirmed the break happened at the weld, and contacted the manufacturer about a replacement blade. Kaylin follows up on the corded vs. cordless tool discussion and points out that Metabo’s 36V line has an AC adapter that lets some cordless tools plug into the wall. The question is, why don’t more tool companies do this? Joshua shares his experience upgrading from a middle-of-the-road orange drill with a 2Ah battery to a premium Milwaukee set. The old drill nearly broke his wrist while drilling leg holes in three-inch-thick white oak for a Roman workbench, and the new cordless tools have since become essential for fence work, concrete drilling, railings, mixing mud and paint, and property cleanup. We also get a list of Ten Reasons I Hate Marc, including his friendships with Matt and Shannon, his cycling clothes confidence, his alleged invention of cutting boards, Duggee being cooler than a goldfish, and all that sweet, sweet Wood Talk revenue. QUESTIONS Joel Bjornstad asks why his chisels perform so much better on a Roubo-style workbench than they did when he worked on the concrete floor with plywood as a backer. Is it posture, physics, or woodworking magic? Monte Bell asks how to manage customer expectations when commissioned furniture always seems to take longer than expected. Should he double the timeline he gives customers, or is there a better way to explain the uncertainty of custom work? Emil built a massive southern yellow pine workbench top from pole barn post offcuts. The slab is about 6 1/4" thick, 37" wide, and 80" long, and he wants to know how thick a top can be while still allowing vises, bench dogs, and holdfasts to work properly.
