• Clip from "Why are we poor in Latin America? | Armando de la Torre"    • ¿Por qué somos pobres en América Latina? |...   Dr. Armando de la Torre comments in his presentation that Latin America has not always been poor and affirms that fifty years ago, Cuba, Argentina, Uruguay, and Venezuela enjoyed great wealth, almost comparable to that of developed countries, a situation that has been lost due to the political decisions of their rulers, who insist on keeping their people mired in poverty. He mentions that countries like Chile and Peru are making great efforts to improve their living conditions to overcome backwardness and believes that Brazil and Mexico are in the process of becoming future powers. He also explains that poverty has no causes since it is the natural state of man, while wealth has allowed humanity to exceed the average life expectancy. He also emphasizes three important factors for fostering development: free competition, individual effort, and work discipline.
