LA PRIMA CROCIATA L’ASSEDIO E LA PRESA DI ANTIOCHIA A.D. 1098 di Federico E. Perozziello RIASSUNTO L’assedio di Antiochia tra l’autunno del 1097 e la tarda primavera dell’anno 1098 segnarono un punto determinante nella storia della Prima Crociata. La vittoria finale dei Principi Crociati all’inizio dell’estate del 1098 dimostrò alle popolazioni islamiche dell’Asia Minore che gli Occidentali erano un nemico temibile e quasi invincibile. Baldovino di Boulogne si era momentaneamente separato dai suoi compagni per diventare il signore della ricca città armena di Edessa e questa ulteriore conquista dei Crociati costituì un segnale per i Turchi e i loro regni e potentati locali che gli equilibri erano mutati. Anche l’imperatore bizantino Alessio I Comneno si rese conto che sarebbe occorsa tutta la sua consumata abilità strategica e diplomatica per non venire travolto dai successi presenti e futuri di quell’insieme di avventurieri e uomini di fede. Il personaggio principale di questo episodio della Crociata fu Boemondo di Taranto, figlio di Roberto il Guiscardo, che dopo la conquista della metropoli di Antiochia si autonominò Principe della stessa. L’ambizione di questo guerriero normanno era pari soltanto al proprio coraggio che rasentava la temerarietà e spesso la superava. I suoi compagni d’avventura riconoscevano il ruolo di supremazia che Boemondo era solito esercitare. Si sentirono probabilmente sollevati quando il nuovo signore di Antiochia li vide partire verso Gerusalemme e la conquista della loro parte di gloria, mentre il normanno rimaneva nella città appena conquistata. Perozziello ABSTRACT The siege of Antioch between the autumn of 1097 and the late spring of the year 1098 marked a decisive point in the history of the First Crusade. The final victory of the Crusader Princes in the early summer of 1098 proved to the Islamic populations of Asia Minor that the West was a fearsome and almost invincible enemy. Baldwin of Boulogne had momentarily separated from his companions to become the ruler of the wealthy Armenian city of Edessa and this further conquest by the Crusaders was a signal to the Turks and their local kingdoms and potentates that the balance had shifted. Even the Byzantine emperor Alexius I Comnenus realised that it would take all his consummate strategic and diplomatic skills not to be overwhelmed by the present and future successes of that set of adventurers and men of faith. The main character in this episode of the Crusade was Bohemond of Taranto, son of Robert Guiscard, who, after conquering the metropolis of Antioch, appointed himself its Prince. The ambition of this Norman warrior was matched only by his courage, which bordered on temerity and often exceeded it. His fellow adventurers recognised the role of supremacy that Bohemond used to exercise. They were probably relieved when the new lord of Antioch saw them leaving for Jerusalem and the conquest of their share of glory, while the Norman remained in the newly conquered city.
