Papasidero and local area
Feel at peace and escape from the world... mountains, rivers, great food, friendly community, beautiful coast and beaches. Walk through the mountains along the ancient paths or chill by the river. Five minute drive and a 20 minute walk up the river brings you to a stunning waterfall. Bathe in the pool and allow the falls to crash over you. Exhilarating!! We have the best of times here 😊 and loads of adventures and loads to explore and do... We also love doing absolutely nothing!! Papasidero is host to numerous outdoor activities including a popular water rafting center, quad bikes, adventure park, a lovely beach by the river with a snack bar, river swing, paint-balling, canyoning, village festivals and parties and Guides that can take you trekking in the mountains and water trekking. Very warm and friendly welcome in the local B&B’s. It is an ideal location for those enjoying life with something for everyone. Numerous shops, bars serving food, hairdresser and a street market once a week. There is even an opportunity to join an Italian tradition cooking experience. For those interested in history, visit the ancient church built into the mountain and castle ruins with panoramic mountain views. The castle was built before the year 1000 probably by the Lombards. It became the home of the ancient barons of Papasidero. The village was originally fortified from the castle and the walls completely enclosed the inhabited area of the village, providing protection against raiders. Once a year on the 8th December, the village enjoys a giant bonfire illuminating the walls of the castle in memory of their ancestors. The traditions has pasted down the generations and is followed by a street party with great food and drinks! The important Romito Caves are located nearby with its graffiti and relics. It is believed that the caves were occupied from 10.500 BC. The historic Italian village of Papasidero nestles between the forest covered mountains above the River Lao in the Pollino National Park (21 km from the coast and 15 km from the A3 motorway in Calabria). The nearest international airports are Lamezia International Airport (110 miles) and Naples (150 miles). It’s a straightforward journey from Naples Airport as the A3 is approx 10 min drive from the airport and you stay on this new motorway until the Mormanno junction (approx 20 mins to Papasidero). There is also a main line station at Scalea. Airport transfers available.
