The trial against Colombian doctors for the massive medical leave fraud that cost the Chilean treasury over 31 billion pesos has been thrown into limbo. Judge Alejandra García Bocaz recused herself after removal proceedings were initiated against her for allegedly leaving the country while on medical leave. Although the preliminary investigation found no wrongdoing, the defendants are seeking to have the trial dismissed. "This is opportunism by the defense" and "a delaying tactic," were heard among the prosecutors this morning, who had hoped to conclude the proceedings next Tuesday after a year of hearings and the testimony of hundreds of witnesses and experts.
