River Herring Young of the Year Assessment Survey
From July through October, NJDEP Fish & Wildlife’s Marine Resources Administration conducts their annual River Herring Young of Year Assessment Survey. This component of the larger population assessment utilizes a 100-foot seine net to target juvenile blueback and alewife herring that were spawned in the spring. The data collected during this survey is used to generate an index of species abundance, which serves to inform future Fishery Management Plans. This important work helps monitor the health and population trends of river herring along New Jersey’s coastal rivers, ensuring the sustainability of these vital migratory fish species.
