Erik Bosgraaf plays Eerste Lickepot I & II by Jacob van Eyck
‘De eerste licke-pot’ (The first ‘licky-pot’) is one of those little gems in Der Fluyten Lust-hof that begs to be polished over and over again. It is based on a French ‘chanson à boire’, ‘Lorsque je mouille, mouille, mouille’. When Van Eyck used it in 1646, it had been wildly popular for a year, which shows how much the Utrecht master followed trends. The sources of Der Fluyten Lust-hof are not always clear as to which variations belong together in a single composition, and this is a good example. At first glance the ‘licke-pot’ variations seem to form a single work. In the New Vellekoop Edition, however, the editor Thiemo Wind distilled them into two separate pieces. He shares his considerations on pp. 433–435 of his dissertation (see literature). He has to admit, however: ‘Perhaps, though, we are turning this into a bigger musicological issue than necessary. … One composition or two? Van Eyck, a practical musician, would probably not have made much fuss about it either way.’ The first piece is set in a very low register, which is further emphasized in this performance by the use of a basset recorder. In the second set, the theme sounds an octave higher (and thus two octaves in this version, through the use of different recorder sizes). 🔹 Instruments This piece is played on a Basset in G a'=465 Hz after Schnitzer and a 'Ganassi' alto in G a'= 465 Hz by Monika Musch (Freiburg) 🔹Edition used: New Vellekoop Edition, Nos. 134 & 135. 🔹Literature: Thiemo Wind, ‘Jacob van Eyck and the Others – Dutch Solo Repertoire for Recorder in the Golden Age’ (Utrecht: KVNM, 2011). 🔹 Webshop Buy all CD's here https://www.erikbosgraaf.com/webshop/ 🔹 Let's connect • Twitter: / erikbosgraaf • Instagram: / erikbosgraaf • Facebook Page: / erikbosgraaf. . • Website: https://www.erikbosgraaf.com
