The Last Great Battle Between Rome and Parthia | The Battle of Nisibis (AD 217)

The Battle of Nisibis (AD 217) was the final great military confrontation between the Roman Empire and the Parthian Empire, bringing nearly three centuries of Roman–Parthian rivalry to its dramatic conclusion. Fought between Emperor Macrinus and King Artabanus the Fourth, this brutal three-day battle featured Roman legions, Parthian horse archers, heavily armored cataphracts, and even camel-mounted cataphracts in one of the largest clashes of the ancient world. In this documentary, we examine the political crisis that followed the death of Vologases the Fifth, the civil war between Artabanus the Fourth and Vologases the Sixth, Emperor Caracalla's invasion of Parthia, his assassination, the rise of Macrinus, and the events that led to the Battle of Nisibis. Using the accounts of Cassius Dio, Herodian, and other ancient sources alongside modern historical research, this video reconstructs the battle, its tactics, and its consequences for both empires. Although neither side achieved a decisive battlefield victory, the peace that followed marked the effective end of the Roman–Parthian Wars. Within a few years, the Parthian Empire collapsed and was replaced by the Sasanian Empire, ushering in a new era of conflict with Rome.
