Grounding Clinical AI: From Hospital Cross-Cover to Oncology Billing Automation
How is artificial intelligence (AI) shifting from a theoretical tool into a practice-changing reality for clinicians and oncology departments? In this episode of the AI Oncology Revolution, host Arturo Loaiza-Bonilla, MD, MSEd, FACP, the systemwide chief of Hematology and Oncology at St. Luke's University Health Network, sat down with Connor Yost, MD, an internal medicine resident at Creighton University School of Medicine, to explore the frontlines of medical AI. Yost and Loaiza-Bonilla examined how generative AI can be safely deployed in clinical workflows, the benchmarks proving its efficacy, and innovative tools changing medical education and cross-cover communication. First, Yost shared insights into the development of Nurse Althea, an innovative, AI-powered cross-cover simulator designed to replicate high-pressure hospital paging and messaging environments. Contextualized by an NYU Langone study on frontier models, the speakers then analyzed the finding that general foundation models like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude frequently outperform specialized clinical AI tools across complex medical benchmarks, real-world physician queries, and clinical scenario testing. Additional topics of interest included why general large language models struggle with hallucinations in complex oncology cases and how anchoring AI to structured data, such as NCCN Guidelines, ensures accuracy in decision-support systems. Moreover, they discussed how clinicians interact with AI tools independently, detailed how they verify outputs, and highlighted the absolute necessity of maintaining data privacy by keeping patient identifiers out of public models. Finally, they touched upon how an AI tool, Skriber, can streamline medical billing by automating documentation reviews, matching charts to appropriate ICD-10 and CPT codes, and predicting potential insurance denials to reduce administrative burdens and lower overhead costs. 00:00 Introduction 02:13 Defining Nurse Althea 07:43 Examining the End Game of Nurse Althea and Beyond 11:18 Where Does the Name "Althea" Come From? 12:05 Guidelines/Democratizing Nurse Althea 15:15 Analyzing the NYU Langone Study on Frontier Models 23:31 Discussing Billing Optimization With AI 26:41 Yost's Final Remarks/Conclusion #Oncology #MedicalAI #NurseAlthea #DigitalHealth #CancerResearch #HealthcareInnovation #MedEd Don't forget to check us out on: YouTube: / @cancernetwork X/Twitter: https://x.com/cancernetwrk?lang=en LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/canc...
