Rob Makes Prog - Episode 9 - Overdog, Underdog
Episode 9 in the Rob Makes Prog Series. In this episode, I failed to record my screen! Which means it's just audio and a load of nonsense I wrote down to keep your eyes entertained. But, you can hear the instrumental parts of the vocal sections, and I move onto to the next section... _______________ Against all sensible rationale, I've decided I'm going to document the entire writing and recording process of my next album. This is the first episode. There will be minimal edits, it'll be a warts-and-all documentary with large amounts of me making stuff up as I go along. You will, if you choose to watch it, see me create the songs from scratch, redo endless takes of the same 5 second passage on a multitude of instruments, deliberate over the placement of one 16th note for ten minutes at a time, and see me get frustrated with my own brain. Hopefully, though, you'll also see music coming to life, organically evolving and mutating until it becomes its own thing that's not mine anymore, you'll see accidents happen that create magic, you'll see me improve my playing and rejoice as I nail tricky passages... It's for general music nerds, prog nerds, and people who like to see the process. This is NOT a tutorial! I do not expect anyone to use this as a guide, as they will end up deviating from and polluting their own process, and also, I'm making it all up as I go along anyway! It's for me to remind myself that I can actually do things and how much work I put into them. It's for you to get an insight into what is involved in making mad music with an amenable but slightly unhinged host! A few things to note - I'm using the word 'Prog' here as god knows what else word to use. If the music I make doesn't fit your definition of prog, feel free to call it something else in your head. I don't know what it is. But when I'm making music, I'm not trying to fit in any kind of box, neither am I purposefully trying to put myself outside of a box. I don't care for the box either way. I just want to make music that I like, and usually the music that I like is frenetic, serene, complicated, interesting, jarring, fresh, new, old, beautiful, minimalist, maximalist, but always a narrative in some form or other. Some musicians and bands that I love: Cardiacs, Gong, Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull, Focus, Ivor Cutler, Robert Wyatt, Get the Blessing, Ozric Tentacles, Hawkwind, King Crimson, Rush, Man, The Groundhogs, John Lee Hooker, Fairport Convention, Pentangle, Circulus, Caravan, Black Sabbath, Sleep, Iron Maiden, Wishbone Ash, Sonny Rollins, Charlie Parker, Nubya Garcia, Holst, Stravinsky, Beethoven... the list goes on, and that's not to mention my contemporaries and friends who you should check out: Zenden Greenpurp, Legs on Wheels, Square Wild, Spriggan Mist, EBB, Argham, Epileptic Lizards, Big Hammer, Karma Sheen, A Formal Horse... Anyway, please enjoy! If this is your first encounter with me and my work, please check out my albums available here: https://robharrisonmusic.bandcamp.com https://zmachine.bandcamp.com https://mascotmoth.bandcamp.com And have a look around my channel. I won't be asking you to like and subscribe because I find it very annoying in other videos and by now everyone knows that's how you support a channel! So please do as you will, and may good things happen to you.
