PATTI AUSTIN Any Other Fool
Around the same time as Dusty Springfield recorded the Diane Warren/Robbie Buchanan song 'Any other fool', Sadao Watanabe and Patti Austin memorialised this beautiful ballad on his LP 'Front Seat'. There is no denying the power and range of Patti's voice; it always seems to me that Ms Austin is somehow not regarded in the same group as a Chaka or an Aretha or Dionne, but her voice has such a unique sound and it has been used so exquisitely on such gems as 'Baby come to me' & 'How do you keep the music playing' (both with James Ingram); 'It's gonna be special' and 'The girl who used to be me' among her huge discography. Patti Austin can and has sung every genre, crossing pop, jazz, r&b, funk with ease and expert skill. Although i prefer the Dusty Springfield version of this song; there is no doubt that Patti outsings most vocalists on the planet, this rendition of the mid tempo love song is a great merging of the talents of the Sax supremo Sadao Watanabe and the potent Patti Austin. Enjoy!
