#29 : The History of Labor (Part 2) "Why Workers Risked Everything to Unionize"
Before labor unions were legitimized and foundational labor laws were enacted in the early 1900s, protesting or striking against your employer was a dangerous feat. Many early union strikers and workers were subject to horrendous consequences for protesting in favor of better working conditions and pay. These consequences included jail time or being violently assaulted by authorities or even the national guard. Before labor laws such as the NLRA (National Labor Relations Act) of 1935, and the FLSA (Fair Labor Standards Act) of 1938, the system was in favor of employers and industrial advancement, meaning employees had almost no leverage or rights as it relates to employment. Employers could act with almost no guard rails, change the terms and conditions of employment without notice, and treat workers with a level of neglect that is unthinkable today. Cathleen Scott, board-certified labor and employment lawyer, dives into the history of unions and the brave people who risked it all for better working conditions, and who ultimately pushed the needle towards enacting legislation that still protects workers today.
