VW Passat 2.8 Alternator

2003 VW (volkswagen) Passat 2.8 liter wagon. This car came in with the battery not staying charged after an alternator was just replaced. The voltages from the alternator would jump around from 14.5 volts all the way down to 11.8 volts when a really good load was on the system. The previous shop installed the 90 amp alternator when this needed the 120 amp alternator. Also, there are two styles of alternators as well. There are the valeo and the bosch units. The valeo has the back half of the alternators black most of the time while the bosch units are standard aluminum. You have to remove the bumper, brackets, and disconnect the radiator support to access and remove it on this car. It is called putting it into service mode.
