It's also being shared as a slightly late tribute to mark John McLaughlin's 82nd birthday that he celebrated about a week ago. This is a Mahavishnu Orchestra show that's been up here several times before, but this is a new version that's got a lot going for it. It seems to be a little longer by a few minutes from some older shares, but, most importantly to me, it's the best sounding version that I've heard (check the samples). The time difference might have to do with speed issues, and this one seemed to be in tune, through my rather unsophisticated method of playing along with a freshly tuned guitar. An earlier version I had and am using for sound sample comparisons below seemed a bit sharp (that version might've come from Ian?). I recently came by this version of the show courtesy of propylaen (Joerg), who's brought so many good shows to us during DIME's time. He'd been responsible for an earlier, but shorter version of this same show that I got here about 10 years ago. He'd gotten this from a German collector, who didn't have very specific lineage info beyond what you'll see above. Previous shares have this coming from digital radio or FM. Joerg's given me the green light to share this here, so I'm doing that now. This was the Mahavishnu Orchestra's first ever European date, and it's interesting to see that the included promo material for the Jazz Now! event actually lists them as "John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Band". In addition to this show, there's also a great acoustic solo set (rare for those times) that John played a couple of days after this (August 19th) in the same basic location. That too has been shared here, and goody did some great work several years ago to enable us to hear John, the electric guitar hero, performing much of his totally acoustic My Goal's Beyond album. That is still running, so I'll paste in a link below for anyone who might've missed it. It makes a great companion to this particular MO performance. This is freshly re-tracked from I'd gotten from Joerg. That was done to separate out the instances of speaking from the music. This performance goes a long way in helping to see again what the fuss was all about in regards to the Mahavishnu Orchestra and John's guitar playing in particular. It might be hard for some to realize that music like this was really that new and different in the early 70's.
