Perché creiamo idoli? (Esodo 32)
Why did the people walking in the desert, just a step away from receiving the Law and completing their liberation, give in to total apostasy? In this video, we will discover that idolatry does not arise from the desire to choose a new deity, but from the desperate human need to control the transcendent. When Moses delays descending from the mountain, the people experience the anguish of emptiness, preferring to build a tangible and manipulable "feeling support" rather than listen to the mystery of an invisible God. During the video, we will explore several key themes: 1) The historical and political context: We will discover how this biblical episode reflects the profound religious tensions between the Southern Kingdom (Jerusalem) and the Northern Kingdom. The text, in fact, represents a polemical back-projection to condemn the reforms of King Jeroboam, who introduced the use of young bulls in the sanctuaries of Dan and Bethel. 2) A Comparison of Two Leadership Models: We will analyze the stark contrast between Aaron, an ambiguous leader who indulges the impulses and demands of the masses to avoid conflict, and Moses, a leader capable of making unpopular choices, calling for spiritual responsibility, and interceding for his people to the point of being willing to lay down his own life. 3) Major Philosophical and Theological Interpretations: We will explore the readings of important historical figures. We will delve deeper into the insights of Martin Buber, for whom creating an image of God means objectifying and destroying a living, personal relationship; the pessimism of Luther, who defined the human heart as a "continuous factory of idols;" and finally, the vision of Marx, who identified modern "capital" with the Golden Calf. 4) The Relevance of the Golden Calf: Finally, we will understand why this biblical passage is a merciless critique of our contemporary world. Our deep-rooted inability to wait, our frantic pursuit of instant gratification, and our intolerance for silence still transform us into tireless builders of ideological or technological idols. Biblical faith, by contrast, challenges us to accept the unpredictability of mystery, teaching us that believing fundamentally means knowing how to tolerate absence and learning to wait.
