During a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump said Washington was "frustrated" with the amount of European aid during the conflict with Iran, adding that the alliance had "let the United States down" on this issue. He added that it was good for allies to be willing to help, even if the US didn't need it, but he felt they hadn't provided sufficient support. For his part, Rutte confirmed that the alliance is consulting with member states to raise defense spending to 5% of GDP, indicating that European countries will increase their defense expenditures in the coming period. He added that Europe has already spent "significant sums, amounting to billions of dollars," on the defense sector, as part of strengthening the alliance's capabilities and responding to growing security challenges.
