Learn how to place a fraction on a number line. The position of the fraction depends on the number unit of the line. The graduation of the line corresponds to the small lines found from the beginning to the end of the line. 1) Find the graduation unit The first step is to identify the graduation unit of the half-line. The technique involves finding two consecutive numbers on the line. Numbers are consecutive if they follow one another in the 1-number table, for example, 0 and 1, or 1 and 2. The distance between two consecutive numbers corresponds to the graduation unit of the half-line. This graduation unit is found almost everywhere on the line. Its length is the same everywhere on the line. 2) Find the fraction of a piece The second step is to find the fraction associated with a piece. The graduation unit identified in the first step is divided into several pieces by small lines. Each piece corresponds to a fraction. To find this fraction, simply count the number of pieces in the graduation unit. If the graduation unit is divided into four pieces, then each piece represents one-quarter (1/4) of the graduation unit. This is the fraction associated with a piece of the number line. 3) Place the fraction on the number line The third step is to place the fraction on the number line. Knowing the fraction associated with a piece, it's easy to place any other fraction. Simply add the fraction of a piece each time you move one line along the number line. Sometimes, the denominator of the fraction you want to place on the line is not the same as the denominator of the fraction associated with a piece. In this case, you need to transform the fraction's form to reveal an identical denominator. It is then much easier to find its position on the number line.
