I Avoided Sri Lanka's Tourist Crowds Using an Electric Tuk-Tuk 🇱🇰
Is it possible to find total silence in the most popular tourist spots in Sri Lanka? I am taking an Electric Tuk Tuk into the heart of the Cultural Triangle to see if I can beat the crowds to the ancient ruins of Polonnaruwa and the legendary heights of Sigiriya. After exploring the fallen kings of the past, I am throwing away the map and heading deep into the Central Highlands. I am navigating the emerald peaks and mirror like lakes of the backroads to find the hidden elephant corridors where the giants of the jungle keep their secrets. At 56, this is Living Proof that the best way to see the world is on your own terms, away from the tour buses and the noise. The journey begins in the early morning darkness of Polonnaruwa. While hundreds of people are stuck in massive fuel lines and gas queues, the Charminator and I are gliding past the chaos thanks to electric power. Using modern tech to reach a man made lake built 800 years ago is a strange, beautiful contrast. Exploring the Gal Vihara and the Sacred Quadrangle in total solitude before the tour buses arrived proved that a Solo Travel Sri Lanka itinerary is best handled off the beaten path. After a massive seven dollar buffet and a lesson in hospitality from the locals, I headed toward the peaks. I navigated the steep, uneven stairs of Pidurangala Rock for a sunrise view of Sigiriya that pulls the air right out of your lungs. Every breath was a reminder that at 56, the climb doesn't get easier, it just gets more meaningful. For the second half of this segment, I decided to trade the tourist hotspots for the raw side of the road. Where I worked up a sweat drying rice with the locals and stopped at a roadside cafe to try String Hoppers with dahl for the first time. The episode ends in a hotel overlooking a reservoir in the Central Highlands, watching the clouds roll over the mountains while prayers echo through the valley. This is the Living Proof of the beauty of solo travel adventure, and as always, the road is in charge. --- JOIN THE JOURNEY The Road Report Every other Thursday I send The Road Report.
