While hundreds of people are stuck in massive fuel lines and gas queues, the Charminator and I are gliding past the chaos thanks to electric power. Using modern tech to reach a man made lake built 800 years ago is a strange, beautiful contrast. Exploring the Gal Vihara and the Sacred Quadrangle in total solitude before the tour buses arrived proved that a Solo Travel Sri Lanka itinerary is best handled off the beaten path. After a massive seven dollar buffet and a lesson in hospitality from the locals, I headed toward the peaks. I navigated the steep, uneven stairs of Pidurangala Rock for a sunrise view of Sigiriya that pulls the air right out of your lungs.
