Too Much, Not Enough: Two Sides of the Same Wound

If you’ve ever felt like being fully yourself would make you harder to love—too emotional, too intense, too loud, too sensitive, too needy, too direct, too ambitious—this episode is for you. In this episode of Inner Compass Podcast, Vanessa Bennett explores the too much wound and the not enough wound as two sides of the same adaptation: the fear that authentic selfhood threatens belonging. The psyche learns early what parts of the self are welcomed and what parts create rupture, punishment, withdrawal, shame, or danger—so we begin editing. And over time, many people (especially women) become exhausted not from being themselves, but from managing themselves for the comfort of others. What we cover: • Too much / not enough as the same wound in different clothing • Self-editing as nervous system strategy (tone, face, anger, need, desire, ambition) • The difference between relational care and chronic self-erasure • How “too much” gets used as social control and policing • Why this is body work (throat closes, jaw clenches, heat rises, urge to apologize) • Small acts of non-abandonment (saying less after the no, not cushioning the truth) • The grief that comes when the old bargain changes • Building belonging that doesn’t require you to pre-abandon yourself Reflection questions: • What part of you did you learn was dangerous to show (anger, need, opinion, desire, grief)? • Am I being considerate here, or am I disappearing? • Where do I rush to repair, apologize, soften, or explain before I’m even clear? • What happens in me when someone misunderstands me, disapproves of me, or feels discomfort? For educational purposes only. This isn’t therapy. If you want to go deeper, check out the written companion on Substack and explore community + training at https://www.vanessaBennett.com.
