Joey and Dave attended the same secondary school from seventh through twelfth grade. They knew who each other were, but their paths rarely crossed in any meaningful way. Joey spent much of his time involved in student leadership, while Dave was immersed in band. Like many teenagers, they tended to stay within their established social circles, making a friendship unlikely at the time. That changed years later when Dave became Joey's day-of right-hand man during their high school reunion a decade ago. Now, the roles have shifted a bit. Dave is serving as the reunion chairperson, while Joey joins the effort as one of his trusted supporting cast members. Together, they look back on both the highlights and challenges of growing up in Burke, Virginia. They laugh about the nerve-racking daily journey they made as seventh graders, trekking through hallways filled with sophomores and seniors just to reach the gym at the opposite end of the building. Dave shares stories from his years in band, recalling the countless hours of practice, the literal blood, sweat, and tears, and the satisfaction of earning numerous well-deserved accolades along the way. To close out the first installment of this two-part conversation, Dave offers thoughtful reflections - high school life and how his classmates were far more alike than any of them probably realized, despite the differences that seemed so significant at the time.
