Man of Constant Sorrow - 110 Year Old Song is Timeless

A solo acoustic guitar performance of "Man of Constant Sorrow" -- the Appalachian folk song that traveled from a blind fiddler's songbook in 1913 to a Grammy-winning smash hit in 2001. No band, no production, just the way Dick Burnett would have heard it. This is one of the oldest songs in American folk music, and it refuses to die. Dick Burnett, a blind Kentucky fiddler, published it in 1913. The Stanley Brothers recorded it in 1951. Bob Dylan put it on his debut album in 1962. And then the Coen Brothers made it the centerpiece of O Brother Where Art Thou? in 2000, where Dan Tyminski's vocal (lip-synced by George Clooney) turned it into a number-one country hit and Grammy winner -- 87 years after it was first written down. I've been playing guitar for over 60 years, and this song has been with me for most of them. There's something about the simplicity of it -- three chords, a melody that barely moves, and lyrics about wandering and loss that hit different every decade you live through. "I have no friends to help me now" and "perhaps I'll die upon this train" aren't abstract poetry when you've got six decades of living behind you. My arrangement strips it back to solo acoustic fingerpicking in the key of D, with the open D string droning underneath like the mountain music it came from. No Soggy Bottom Boys harmony, no Dylan harmonica -- just the song the way it started, one voice and one instrument.
