From Heaven to Earth: A Beijing Journey Through Time and Alleys

Welcome to Beijing. This route starts at the Temple of Heaven, following the central axis past the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the Imperial Vault of Heaven, and the Circular Mound Altar. It is a beautiful way to experience the grand, historic side of Beijing. If possible, visit on a weekday. Weekends can get very crowded, which makes it harder to take good photos or simply enjoy the quiet atmosphere. After visiting the Temple of Heaven, exit from the west gate and take subway Line 8 to Shichahai. This is another side of Beijing: old neighborhoods, narrow hutongs, local life, and the everyday rhythm of the city. I often joke that this route feels like a journey “from heaven to earth.” One side is grand history, the other is real daily life.
