Yet, she has spent her entire life raising her young son. Her son, In-hyeon, who is under his mother's care, is now fifty-four. The aftereffects of childhood polio have left him stuck in the world of five. "No," "Mom," "Water," "Yes." Their daily lives, like those of any other family raising a young child, are filled with constant bickering. Their specialties include fussing over side dishes, sulking, and a hobby: throwing around holes in their socks. Furthermore, they're a typical toddler, unable to bathe or shave on their own. Yet, their mother lavishes praise on them, calling them the most upright and respectable children in the world. They say that even though they may lack talent, they never hurt others, they know how to share, and above all, their love for their mother is more genuine than any other child in the world. This mother, who has never been overflowing with joy with her son, has had nothing to lose these days, but now she has a growing list of worries. ■ A Hunchbacked Old Mother's New Year's Wish Another year has passed, and both mother and son have grown a year older. Consequently, the wrinkles on her face have deepened, and the weight of time has made her waist hunched over by the day. But even as seasons and years change, her son, In-hyeon, remains five years old. Looking at her son, things she hadn't considered in her youthful, vibrant days suddenly come to mind, filling her with anxiety.
