Once, while traveling with his disciples, Shri Guru Gorakhnath Ji visited the court of King Shri Bhartrihari Maharaj of Ujjaini (present-day Ujjain). King Bhartrihari received a grand welcome and extended unwavering service to Guru Gorakhnath. Guru Gorakhnath was deeply pleased with the king's unparalleled service. Placing his hand on the young, radiant king's forehead, Guru Gorakhnath saw the signs of becoming a great saint. However, King Bhartrihari was currently engrossed in the sensual affairs of his beautiful wife and numerous other women, and in managing the state administration. As Gorakhnath departed with his disciples, the king bowed respectfully and bowed to him. Gorakhnath was deeply moved by his greeting. Guru Gorakhnath pondered for a moment, wondering what he could offer him that would be truly extraordinary. He then took a fruit from his bag and gave it to the king, declaring, "This is the immortal fruit. Whoever eats this will never grow old, never suffer from illness, and will always remain young and beautiful." After this, Guru Gorakhnath, chanting "Alakh Niranjan," set off on his journey to unknown lands. After they left, the king gazed intently at the immortal fruit. He had a special love for his wife. So, he thought, if he fed this fruit to his wife, she would remain beautiful and youthful forever. With this thought in mind, the king gave the immortal fruit to the queen and explained its special properties. But alas! The beautiful queen had a special affection for the city's police chief. So, the queen gave the immortal fruit to the police chief, explaining its special properties to him and said, "Eat it, so that your youth and vigor will be useful to me." When the police chief left the palace with this wonderful immortal fruit, he thought, "I have to pretend to love the queen for wealth, so what good will I do by eating this fruit?" The police chief thought, "I will give this to my best friend, the royal dancer. She never refuses a single request and is always devoted to me. If she remains young, she will be able to bring happiness to others, and to me as well." He gave the mango fruit to his dancer friend. The royal dancer did not reply and kept the immortal fruit. After the police officer left, she thought, "What fool would want to live this sinful life long? I am fine as I am now. But the king of our kingdom is a very good man. He is a righteous man; for the welfare of the people of the country, he should live a long life." Thinking this, she somehow managed to get an appointment with the king. In private, she explained the virtues of the immortal fruit and gave it to him, saying, "Your Majesty, please eat this, because your life is precious to us." The king recognized the fruit as soon as he saw it and was stunned. Upon further inquiry, when he learned the full story, he instantly became detached from his kingdom and his queens. Renouncing the worldly illusions, Bhartrihari became a recluse and, leaving his kingdom, went to seek refuge with Guru Gorakhnath.
