We'll expose this new method! The "multi-function copier" in convenience stores is convenient for printing images and issuing tickets. A new type of scam is emerging that exploits this device. "Q: Have you heard of multi-function copier scams?" "I've never heard of it." "Is it about copying your My Number (social security number)?" (Woman in her 60s) "Like your resident registration?" (Man in his 20s) One day, Ms. A received a phone call from someone claiming to be a police officer, saying, "Ms. A is suspected of a crime." "We will show you evidence that you are the culprit." "Go to a convenience store and print out the evidence documents." (Fake police officer) When Ms. A entered the instructed reservation number into the multi-function copier at the convenience store, what printed out were an arrest warrant and a statement of confession. This new type of fraud, known as "multi-function copier fraud," involves using convenience store multi-function copiers to print documents such as statements or arrest warrants, gaining the victim's trust, and then swindling them out of money. This new type of fraud has been confirmed in Sapporo and throughout Japan. What is the motive behind having victims operate the multi-function copiers? "The aim is to make people trust the person more by having them actually print out statements and arrest warrants and then seeing them," (Inspector Tomonori Nishinaka, Hokkaido Prefectural Police Headquarters, Community Safety Department). People on the street reacted to this new tactic… "It's a little hard to believe. The fact that they instruct you to print it out, that part is suspicious," (Man in his 20s) "It's scary, scary. I don't believe it," (Woman in her 20s) "I wouldn't believe it if I didn't have any idea why, but I'd be surprised to see the document, so I'd probably call the police to confirm first," (Woman in her 60s) "(If an arrest warrant came out) I might hide it, I might not contact anyone because I'd be scared of being found out," (High school student) In Hokkaido, there have been multiple inquiries since December 2025. What can you do to avoid being deceived? "The police will never instruct you to operate a multi-function copier at a convenience store. They will never instruct you to transfer or send money for an investigation. If you feel uneasy, please consult the police or someone around you," (Inspector Nishinaka)
