How to fix a Canon T2i built in flash not opening

The built in flash in my canon T2i purchased in 2010 won't open. There was no sound when I press the flash switch on the side. There did not seem to be any power to open the built in flash ... no clicking sound. I read that there was a micro switch in the hot shoe for the flash. After tinkering around, It appears that the hot shoe just needed some cleaning to remove all the gunk that has accumulated through the years which prevented the aluminum flap which was pressing down on the micro switch to lift up. Tools used are mini screwdriver, rubbing alcohol, tissue and q-tips. After removing the gunk and adjusting the aluminum flap, the built in flash now works. Hope this helps.
