FoodRX Program Spotlight

Margaret spent years as a nurse educating others on how to prevent and manage diabetes. Not long ago she found out she herself was in danger of developing the disease. She knew she needed to make a change to her diet and exercise habits so she turned to a collaboration between the YMCA, University of Houston, and Houston Food Bank for help. Through the FoodRX Program, the Houston Food Bank provided Margaret with free healthy food from partners like East End Social Services along with nutrition education to teach her things like what foods to look for in the grocery store and what to avoid so that she could continue managing her condition after the study ended. Margaret credits the healthy habits she learned and food she was given easy access to in the program for her feeling much better and being much healthier these days. Food RX is a Houston Food Bank program in which people participating in certain community health initiatives or studies also get a prescription that gives them free healthy food from specific Houston Food Bank partners and access to nutrition education.
