Traditional Decision-Making in Evaluation: Emily CHEPTOO – Kipsungu Village

Emily CHEPTOO was born in 1978. She hails from Kipsungu Village in Mariashoni Location of Elburgon Area in Nakuru County. She is a small-scale farmer. According to Emily in this video clip, the Ogiek community relies heavily on a Council of Elders to assess and resolve issues, including those related to natural resource management and community development projects. These elders, who have taken a sacred oath, are responsible for making impartial decisions that are considered final and binding. When new projects are introduced, such as livestock or agricultural initiatives, the community emphasises the importance of proper training and education before implementation. The elders' support for these projects is crucial, as they adapt to changing times while maintaining their role in decision-making. However, the community faces challenges in project evaluation and effectiveness due to a lack of local leadership and representation, which hinders their access to development opportunities and job prospects.
