AFD's Community Paramedic

Beginning in 2017, the Alexandria Fire Department introduced our Mobile Integrated Health/Community Paramedic (MIH/CP) program. Community paramedicine is a new and evolving model of community-based health care where paramedics function outside their customary emergency response and transport roles. They facilitate more appropriate use of emergency care resources (medical transport units or the emergency department) and/or enhance access to primary care, other allied health professionals, mental health, social services, or community risk reduction.
