Before the recount began, the election appellant, Democratic Party candidate Maeng Jeong-seop, was forcibly evicted after repeatedly raising objections. Our reporter is on the scene. [Reporter] The recount for the Chungju mayoral election was scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM. However, before the recount started, the election appellant, Democratic Party candidate Maeng Jeong-seop, raised objections, demanding the disclosure of the National Election Commission's CCTV footage and scanned image files. The Chungcheongbuk-do Election Commission explained several times that the matter had already been dismissed, but Candidate Maeng continued to raise objections. Consequently, the Chairman of the Election Commission requested voluntary eviction twice. When the appellant did not leave even after this, the Commission issued three warnings before forcibly removing him. Police forces were deployed for the forced eviction, and the appellant was escorted out of the recounting room by grabbing his arms and legs. Even after the appellant was removed, observers representing him raised complaints and staged a banner protest. Consequently, the recount began at 1:30 PM, a delay of approximately 30 minutes. The outcome of the Chungju mayoral election in North Chungcheong Province was decided by a margin of 124 votes, or 0.11 percentage points. With the number of invalid votes estimated at 2,277—18 times the margin of victory—it appears that the handling of invalid votes will be the focus of the investigation. During the recount, all 108,000 ballots will be verified manually without the use of ballot sorting machines. The National Election Commission (NEC) expects the results of the recount to be released sometime after 6 p.m. Considering the gravity of the matter, the police have deployed riot police to the Chungju City NEC and the Korea National University of Transportation recount sites to prepare for any contingencies.
