Task Group 77.3 must run the Palawan Passage and reach safety, but enemy submarines are waiting beneath the surface. In this episode of the Pacific Strike ’85 campaign for Sea Power: Naval Combat in the Missile Age, I draw on my experience as a former U.S. Navy sonar supervisor as we organize the task group’s ASW screen, deploy helicopters and sonobuoys, work our shipboard sonar systems, and prosecute submarine contacts in difficult weather. With every ship, helicopter, weapon, and loss carrying forward through Task Force Mode, getting the force through the passage is just as important as finding and destroying the submarines hunting us.
