Six Important Questions about Govardhana: A Lecture by Madhavananda Prabhu During a pilgrimage to India, Bhakti School participants, along with Mukunda Murari Prabhu, listen to a profound lecture by Madhavananda Prabhu at Chataka Parvat—the site where Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, while living in Gambhira in Jagannatha Puri, visited the ocean daily to bathe. This place is associated with one of the most intimate episodes of His inner life. One day, Lord Chaitanya suddenly ran toward Chataka Parvat Hill, repeating a verse from the Srimad-Bhagavatam glorifying Govardhana. In a state of supreme spiritual ecstasy, He perceived the hill as Vrindavana Dhama and Govardhana itself. Falling to the ground, He transformed into the bliss of divine love. The acharyas explain that at that moment, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was experiencing the mood of a manjari—a maidservant of Srimati Radharani's sakhī. This is the highest level of inner service in Krishna consciousness. At the same time, Lord Chaitanya Himself strictly forbade Vaishnavas from ascending Govardhana Hill, considering Him nondifferent from the body of Krishna. The first question arises: why did He Himself ascend the hill? The answer lies in the nature of bhava—it was not a conscious violation of principles, but a spontaneous manifestation of transcendental love. During his lecture, Madhavananda Prabhu formulates six key questions and answers: Why did Madhavendra Puri ascend Govardhana? He discovered the Deity of Gopal and reestablished worship, initiating a special line of devotional service in which Govardhana is revealed as Krishna's personal interlocutor. Why did Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura create his bhajan-kutir on Govardhana Hill? This topic is crucial, and the lecturers explain in detail how spiritual ascent is not related to physical positions, but to the depth of sadhana and fidelity to the guru-parampara. Why does Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati give the divine name Vinod-Madhava, and not Radha-Vinod-Madhava? Madhavananda Prabhu explains that this reflects the theological emphasis on service to Krishna as the center of spiritual attraction. Why is Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati's bhajan kutir located above the temple? This architectural design symbolizes the priority of internal service over external spaces. Finally, why are the Deities of Vyasadeva and Madhvacarya installed in the kutir? This points to the philosophical foundation of Gaudiya Vaishnavism and the continuity of tradition.
